About Us
Keswick Red Squirrel Group (KRSG) is a volunteer-led, community group dedicated to protecting and conserving native red squirrels in our local area. Since forming in March 2020, our efforts have focused on one goal: keeping red squirrels thriving in and around Keswick.
Protecting Red Squirrels in the Heart of the Lake District
Red squirrels are under serious threat from invasive grey squirrels, which carry the Squirrel Pox Virus (SQPV), harmless to greys but usually fatal to reds. Once infected, red squirrels deteriorate rapidly and suffer a painful illness, becoming vulnerable to all sorts of debilitating issues. They almost always die within 2-3 weeks. With a single outbreak, an entire community of reds can be lost in the space of a few weeks.
We work to protect reds by controlling invasive grey squirrels using lawful and humane means.
What We Aim To Do
Protect and grow the red squirrel population in our area
Educate the public about red squirrel conservation
Share information and support local efforts to protect reds
Participate in broader scientific and conservation initiatives
Work closely with other organisations and landowners to improve outcomes
Our Team and Area
We are a dedicated team of local volunteers, with around 20 active rangers and woodland monitors who keep an eye on key squirrel habitats and sightings.
We operate within a defined area around Keswick, see the map for details.
KRSG is a member of Northern Red Squirrels, the collective voice for red squirrel groups operating in northern England.
